On the bank of the Pamba in Aranmula stands one of Kerala's most famous Krishna temples. The Lord here is Parthasarathy – Krishna as the charioteer of Arjuna (Partha) – a tall standing four-armed idol. The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams praised by the Alvar poets, and one of the five Kerala temples linked with the Pandava brothers.
Aranmula is a temple that feeds people. Its year is shaped by the river: the great Vallasadya feasts offered to the crews of the snake boats, the Thiruvona Thoni that brings provisions on Onam day, and the Uthrattathi boat race, when the palliyodams glide past the temple steps to the sound of vanchipattu.
The story goes that after the Kurukshetra war Arjuna installed this image of Krishna to atone for having killed Karna while he was unarmed. The idol is said to have been carried to the spot on a raft made of six pieces of bamboo – aaru mula in Malayalam – which is how many explain the name Aranmula. In one version there were seven pieces, and one drifted away on the way.
The other four Pandava brothers are believed to have founded Vishnu temples nearby: Yudhishthira at Thrichittatt, Bheema at Thiruppuliyur, Nakula at Thiruvanvandoor and Sahadeva at Thrikkodithanam. Pilgrims often visit all five in a single day. A shrine of Balarama in the lower part of the complex is considered older than the main shrine.
The temple is built in the Kerala style, with two-storeyed gateways and wall paintings thought to date from the early 18th century. It has deep ties with Sabarimala: the Thanka Anki, the golden attire offered to Ayyappa by a Travancore king, is kept here and taken in procession to Sabarimala before the Mandala Pooja, and the Thiruvabharanam procession from Pandalam also passes through Aranmula. The famous Aranmula kannadi, a mirror made of polished metal rather than glass, is traditionally linked to the temple. The temple is administered by the Travancore Devaswom Board.

Men: mundu (dhoti); remove shirts and vests before entering the nalambalam. Women: saree, set-mundu, long skirt with blouse, or churidar. Follow the temple's current notices.
By the temple's tradition, entry to the nalambalam is for Hindus; the riverbank, the boat race and the town are open to all. The temple stands on raised ground and is reached by a long flight of steps from the east. Follow the temple's current notices.
For a quiet darshan, come on an ordinary morning outside the Onam season. To see Aranmula at its liveliest, visit during the Vallasadya season (roughly Karkidakam to Kanni, July–September) or on Uthrattathi day in Chingam for the boat race – expect very large crowds and road restrictions. Vallasadya is a vazhipadu arranged by sponsors and the boat committees, not a public meal on every day.
